In Tokyo, baseball returns to the Olympics after twelve years, and Czech team iRADIO doesn’t want to miss it

Czech baseball players want to qualify for the Olympic Games for the first time in history. But in the past, only the Dutch and Italians were able to advance from Europe. If the Czechs want to be part of baseball’s return to the Tokyo Games program, they must first finish in the top five at next year’s European Championship and then succeed in Olympic qualification.

“We have such a program for Tokyo. We are approaching the stage where we have to push the team, so we have training camps and so on. It will be difficult, but we are preparing for it,” described the chairman of Czech Baseball Association, Petr Ditrich.

Baseball will return to the Summer Olympics program after twelve years, and the Czech national team will not want to miss it. Up to two countries can represent Europe in 2020 in Tokyo.

“This is a tournament that can push you forward. I think you have the ability. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that it works out,” MLB legend Cal Ripken wished the Czech team’s luck in the fight for the Olympic Games.

The main European favorites to participate in Tokyo are the Dutch, who are attacking for a third straight title at the European Championships.

“The Netherlands is a bit different. Italy, Germany, Spain – that’s just our level,” Ditrich said. Some European countries mentioned by the chairman of the Czech Baseball Association, Petr Ditrich, help players with dual citizenship to achieve better results.

“If there is a championship where only players born in those countries play, we are better than the Dutch and the Italians. The Dutch use players from Curaçao and other provinces, the Italian passports is easy to get, and anyone from the Caribbean can play for Spain, including Cuba, if I simplify it a little bit. It’s hard to argue with it in any way,” said Ditrich.

It’s hard to get a Czech passport, and what’s more, the national team doesn’t want to go this way.

“A reasonable compromise is two or three key players who will somehow kick the team and move it to another level,” admitted the chairman of the Czech Baseball Association, Petr Ditrich, but he would not oppose a certain revival of group.
